Dental Implants

Missing teeth can be a huge self-esteem problem for many people and may result in diminished confidence. Unfortunately, many adults suffer from tooth loss. Approximately 70 percent of adults over the age of 35 have lost a tooth, and by the age of 74, about a quarter of adults have lost all of their teeth. Fortunately, Dr. Langer, DDS, a leading cosmetic dentist that specializes in dental implants in Brooklyn, can help restore confidence and repair smiles.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are one of the most popular methods for remedying tooth loss caused by decay, extraction, dental disease, failed root canal, or trauma to the mouth instead of dental bridges and dentures. Dental implants are artificial teeth inserted into the jaw during surgery. Though dental bridges may be less expensive, dentists have to file down neighboring teeth to install the device. Dental implants, on the other hand, do not damage other teeth because they are screwed directly into the jawbone.

Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Dental implants are not for everyone. Typically, you are a good candidate for dental implant surgery if you are in good oral health and have strong bone support beneath the missing teeth. If your bones are deteriorating, the dental implants may not succeed and will not take hold in the jaw. Dentists may recommend bone grafting in this situation.

What is the Procedure Like?

Dental Implants | Dental Bridges | Dentures | Brooklyn
As an experienced dental implant dentist in Brooklyn, Dr. Langer most commonly recommends endosteal dental implants. This means that the implants are inserted directly into the bone. This process takes several months to complete.

First, Dr. Langer will place titanium anchors and posts into the jaw to hold the implant. After a period of three to six months, the anchors will heal and attach to the bone. These anchors will hold metal posts in place to secure the implant. Sometimes additional operations are required to help attached the post to the jaw. Each implant holds a single prosthetic tooth in position. The implant then gets affixed to the post part of the anchor.

For patients experiencing bone loss, Dr. Langer may suggest placing an implant onto the top of the jaw and attach the prosthetic teeth using metal framework. These types of implants are not drilled directly into the jaw. Instead, the posts protrude from the gums and may be covered with a crown, or prosthetic tooth, or a dental bridge.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer many benefits over other tooth replacement methods:

  • Dental implants are typically very successful procedures. About 95 percent of patients that received lower jaw implants had a successful experience. Approximately 90 percent of patients that installed dental implants in the upper jaw also experienced success!
  • Implants look natural and feel like your own teeth.
  • They are sturdier than real teeth, and can prevent bone loss and gum recession.
  • Unlike traditional dental bridges, implants do not damage neighboring teeth upon insertion.
  • Dental implants are less prone to cavities.
