    What is a Periodontist?

A Periodontist is a certified dentist who specializes in the gums, roots, bone, and the foundational structure of your teeth. Periodontists are recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA), they focus on the health and maintenance of the mouth, and may also do surgery on a variety of dental issues.  The main goal of periodontists is ensuring their patients’ teeth receive the appropriate treatment, diagnosis, and care. These specialists practice two extra years after their dentistry school for extensive study and training. Periodontists concentrate in gum disease and gingivitis as well as:

When should you see a Periodontist?

Gum Disease can be serious. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms below, make an appointment you’re your Brooklyn periodontist immediately:

      • Bleeding of the gums
      • Tender, red, and swelling of the gums
      • Severe bad breath
      • Change or distortion in the way you feel your teeth or jaw match up

    * Gum disease is treatable if detected early. Those who smoke, are diabetic and menopausal women are more susceptible to gum disease.

    Non-surgical Periodontal Treatment

Dr. Langer’s non-surgical periodontal therapies have proven to be successful in avoiding invasive methods of treatment to correct a dental health issue, such as an infection of the gums. Non-surgical therapies include scaling, root planning, antibiotics and others.

    Plaque Control

Fight cavities, bad breath, plaque, tartar and reduce your chances of developing gum disease with a solid dental hygiene routine. Periodontal disease is caused by plaque and bacteria that builds up on teeth over the years. Plaque can build up due to a poor hygiene routine, poor diet and smoking. Most cases of periodontal disease develop because of bacterial plaque that builds up on the teeth and is not removed through neglect, or “piles” on due to bad habits. Built up plaque that hasn’t been removed often results in tartar, which can’t be removed through traditional brushing and flossing. Consult with Dr. Langer to find out more about how to maintain the healthiest mouth possible, he’ll educate about electronic toothbrushes, floss, mouthwash and other dental health items that will help keep your mouth in top shape and prevent disease and other oral problems. Be sure to have your teeth cleaned by a dental hygienist professional on a regular basis- schedule a cleaning at Dr. Langer’s Brooklyn office. Getting your teeth cleaned at least once a year, and preferably every six months will lessen the likelihood of you developing gum and tooth problems.

    Periodontal Surgery

Consider a Periodontist a plastic surgeon for your mouth. Periodontists can perform certain surgeries that dramatically improve the appearance of your smile. A periodontist can perform a number of surgeries, including gum grafts, osseous surgery, cosmetic periodontal surgery to restore function to the tissue of the gums, bone grafting and regenerative therapy, ridge augmentation, bone grafting- also known as a sinus lift or elevation, and dental implants.
